This paper analyzes the way characters are shaped in Yasunari Kawabata’s novel 「White snow」and the following are the characteristics of the character shaping discussed in this paper. First, unlike most of the other novels by Yasunari Kawabata written from the viewpoint of a male with a female heroin as the subject, the story develops from the viewpoint of the female heroin. As a result, in this novel, males who viewed females as subjects become the subjects through the prism of the subjective eyes of the female character of the viewpoint. In addition, not only the heroin is described as a subject coming into the eyes of males but also the female’s secret figure that experiences conflicts, feels tormented, and flounces with longing and narcissism is explicitly described as it is. Second, all major characters are drawn as lonely characters. Third, the females’ beauty is described only abstractly without any concrete description. Fourth, clean beauty such as the beauty of angels and the voluptuousness of ladies sometimes harmonize with each other and sometimes conflict with each other. Fifth, from the mind of the character of viewpoint, the psychology of wanting to return to her young girlhood and the psychology of wanting to be liberated from the daily routine to which she is confined are triggered by the white snow that reminds of fairy tales to be expressed outward. Sixth, elements that emit the smell of so-called ‘devildom’, which is one of the major motifs of Kawabata’s post-war literature, are immanent in the novel.
