초록

Hu Shih is a liberalist who constantly struggled in the political, social, and cultural transition period of the early 20th century in China. Based on this, this paper discusses the Hu’s liberalism in late 1940s, and its practical implications in two main aspects. First, in the late 1940s, Hu emphasized the need for liberalism through writing activities and a public lecture. During this period, Hu expressed about the lack of the spirit of “tolerance” in Chinese society at the time, he emphasized the importance of the “political liberalism”. Second, the late 1940s not only a turning point in modern Chinese history, but also a turning point in life for his own individual life. It is noteworthy that Hu gave a public lecture on liberalism a few months before he left China, publicly declaring that freedom of political expression was more urgent than anything else in the suppressed system at the time. Hu did not close his eyes by the times when freedom and intolerance prevailed, and showed the aspect of a critical intellectual through critical remarks and actions based on liberalism. In summary, Hu’s liberalism in the late 1940s was a practical alternative to criticize China’s political reality in the time of tyranny and despotism. I argue that the implications of Hu’s liberal ideas and activities in the late 1940s cannot be overlooked.
