한국에서 비판적 중국연구 역사에 대한 검토: 이희옥의 연구사를 중심으로

Three aspects are important in the process of establishing China Studies within an academic system: the establishment as a discipline within the social sciences, the establishment and development of the discipline as academic departments (undergraduate) and graduate curricula within universities, and the institutional setting up of academic associations and institutes. In terms of these three aspects, Hee-ok Lee is an important and interesting subject to study when examining the short but meaningful history of critical Chinese studies in Korea. Lee’s history of Chinese studies in Korea can be divided into three periods based on an ‘endogenous approach’, in which the key concept is ‘socialist ideological transformation’. In the first period, Lee analyzes the complex construction of the theory of early stage of socialism, where the theory of Eastern Societies, based on Marx’s late work, is crucial to explain the specificity of China’s socialist trajectory of reform and open-door. The accomplishments of Hanyang University’s Sino-Soviet Institute during this period serve as an important experience for later years. The second period is the period when the pool of researchers in Chinese area studies increased and the research was institutionalized. In this period, the inherent approach undergoes internal criticism and takes a new step forward, adopting a strategy of ‘standing half-turned around and fighting’. The analysis of this period, which highlights the internal contradictions of Chinese society, is explained in terms of the ideological transformation and the emergence of a social democratic orientation. The third period is characterized by an expansion of topics centered on the activities of the Sungkyunkwan China Institute. This period is characterized by a blurring of analytical orientation toward the content of ‘socialist ideological transformation,’ and it also marks a period of increasing division within critical Chinese studies.
