An Improved Approach for Determining Joint Cutting Window Integrating Penetration Resistance-Maturity and Strength-Maturity Relationships

The purpose of cutting cement concrete pavement joints is to proactively induce early shrinkage cracks, thereby effectively controlling random cracking. Premature cutting can negatively affect the stability and long-term performance of cement concrete pavements. In pavement quality control, the evaluation of strength is based on the curing days of underwater-cured specimens. However, the strength of on-site slabs varies significantly due to temperature fluctuations, making it challenging to make decision. Therefore, this paper defined the relationship between penetration resistance and strength as a function of maturity based on time and temperature through lab and field tests. Literature review and cutting simulation test were conducted to determine optimal joint cutting window, for different curing temperature conditions. For 20℃, a range of 670 °C-hrs to 760 °C-hrs was suggested and for lower temperature, the range was set between 1130 °C-hrs and 1754 °C-hrs. In addition, a mobile sensing system was applied for airport pavement construction site to validate the suggested cutting window, providing practical and reasonable method to control pavement construction quality. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd
