Personal and Collective Therapeutic Effects of Journal Writing: A Case of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl

초록

This paper examines Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl as a representative case of journal writing that enables both personal and collective healing. Drawing on Kathleen Adams’s journal therapy, it explores how Anne’s diary mediates emotional integration and self-reflection under extreme confinement. The diary records layered emotions—fear, frustration, and hope—and her efforts to navigate familial, social, and adolescent challenges. Journal writing functions not merely as emotional release but as a disciplined process that fosters psychological coherence. Simultaneously, the diary transcends personal confession to become a testimony of war and the Holocaust. By transforming personal suffering into collective memory, it performs an ethical function that invites empathy and moral responsibility. Anne’s diary thus demonstrates the therapeutic potential of journal writing for both individuals and communities.
