This study explores the distinctive character of the aesthetic experience in Proust’s In Search of Lost Time, aiming to clarify its nature and structure. It begins with an analysis of the hawthorn episode, the novel’s first full depiction of aesthetic experience, showing how Proust differentiates the aesthetic from the artistic, and aesthetic experience from aesthetic judgment. The final version of the episode suggests that aesthetic experience resists conceptualization and, as an experience that unites life and art, demands a responsible response. The latter part of the study identifies three key components of aesthetic experience in the novel: aesthetic attention, which reveals its temporality; emotional resonance, which invites reflection on the nature of emotion; and aesthetic pleasure, which is justified when it drives artistic creation. While Proust emphasizes the role of aesthetic experience within the narrative of vocation, he also seeks to assign it a domain of its own. This can be understood as a reaction against the decadent worship of art and as a critical distancing from the tradition of modern philosophical aesthetics.
