The Evolution Process of the Gyeong-Yeong Short Course Marathon(1931~1963)

초록

This study focuses on examining the changes in the Gyeong-Yeong Short Course Marathon. Firstly, it investigates the context of the Korean marathon at the time of the competition's establishment. Secondly, it delves into the process of the competition's creation and changes in its organization and sponsorship. Thirdly, it analyzes the participant demographics and course variations and records developments for the competition. During the Japanese colonial period, significant marathon competitions were organized by Japanese groups, with both Joseons and Japanese participating together. The number of participants in these competitions increased over time, spreading from Gyeongseong to various regions, eventually evolving into a nationwide event. The race records from the first to the sixth competitions are challenging to compare due to frequent changes in the course. However, the records improved from the seventh competition when the trail became more stable. Before Korea's liberation, notable athletes such as Kim Eun-bae, Son Ki-jung, and Nam Seung-ryong, among others, participated in the competition and achieved commendable results. After independence, athletes like Seo Yun-bok, Ham Ki-yong, Hwang Young-jo, and Lee Bong-joo, who represented Korea, also participated and performed well in the competition.
