초록
As the civil society in South Korea has increasingly been diversified into sectoral movements since its democratic transition, this study explores the possibility of movement coalition by examining the ‘spanning participants’ who cross the boundaries of various social movements. Focusing on the two protests in which various social movement groups participated, Climate Justice March in 2023 and Seoul Queer Parade in 2024, we have conducted surveys on protest participants and investigated the characteristics of protesters in each protests and spanning participants in particular. Our analysis yields three important findings. Firstly, participants of the climate protest are more likely to both engage in other types of protests and take part in various associations including political parties, labor unions, civic and religious associations, and social clubs in comparison to participants of the queer parade. Secondly, spanning participants in both protests tend to engage in various associations, exhibit stronger political interests, and embrace a more progressive ideology compared to others. Finally, in contrast to spanning participants, recurring participants of either climate protests or queer parades are more likely to serve as members of environmental or sexual minority groups, but they are not necessarily active in other associations. By focusing on spanning protest participants, our study provides implications to identify the conditions for movement coalition and civic solidarity in the social movement society.
