This study examined how nursing students' awareness of the rights of people with mental illness, along with their levels of empathy and social distance, shaped their attitudes toward mental illness. The participants were 140 nursing students from two nursing colleges who had completed a psychiatric nursing practice course. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. The results showed that the mean scores for awareness of the rights of people with mental illness, social distance, and attitudes toward people with mental illness were 3.79, 3.40, and 3.62 out of 5, respectively, and the mean score for empathy was 4.45 out of 7. Attitudes toward people with mental illness were significantly and positively correlated with awareness of rights (r=.44, p<.001), empathy (r=.41, p<.001), and social distance (r=.33, p<.001). Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that satisfaction with the nursing major (β=.24, p=.022), awareness of the rights of people with mental illness (β=.29, p=.001), and empathy (β=.24, p=.004) were significant factors that explained 32.1% of the variance in attitudes. These findings suggest the need to strengthen education on patients' rights and empathy within nursing curricula and to provide positive clinical experiences that reduce prejudice toward people with mental illness through structured educational programs.
