Levinas on the Ethical Subject and the Sympathetical Other

초록

In this paper I pay attention to Levinas who finds humanitas in morality. Levinas bases the ethical subject from his responsibility to the Other. Like Kant, Levinas also did not solve the problem of attribution of moral responsibility. Levinas finds a possible basis for moral responsibility in the Other’s face despite the absolute disconnect between me and the Other. But as long as the self and the Other are absolutely separate, this seems impossible. Nevertheless, I actually interpret that, unlike Levinas’ argument, the face of the Other represents the primal relationship between the subject and the Other. At the same time, each other is already sympathetic Other, and this sympathetic subject and Other is no different from the ethical subject.
