From the perspective of a shipper who needs to transport cargo, there is a way to secure a ship to transport by owning one's own ship, but in most cases, the ship is secured through chartering, which has greater strengths in cost, flexibility, and risk management. When choosing a charter party contract type, shippers take into consideration the company's characteristics, internal and external environmental factors, etc. The purpose of this study is to provide implications for charter party decision-making to charter companies, including shippers, by identifying factors that affect the selection of charter party contract types in the dry bulk shipping market. For this purpose, literature research, interviews, surveys, and binomial logit regression analysis were used. For the empirical analysis, the dependent variable was set as a choice between time charter and voyage charter, and the independent variables were set as company and cargo characteristic factors, company internal environmental change factors, and company external environmental change factors. A hypothesis test was conducted using 111 collected questionnaires. The results of this study are as follows. First, in terms of factors affecting the choice of charter party contract type, cargo volume and ship size were found to have a significant impact on company characteristics. Second, investment propensity and risk management factors were found to have a significant impact on the company's internal environmental factors. Third, in terms of the company's external environmental factors, all variables such as market outlook, volatility, and cost factors were found to have a significant impact. In conclusion, investment decisions and the outlook for future shipping market conditions were selected as important factors to consider when deciding on the type of charter party contract. Therefore, it is important for shippers to obtain quick and accurate information. Recently, big data and artificial intelligence (AI) have been developing rapidly, so it is necessary to come up with ways to actively adopt and utilize them in acquiring information or making decisions.
