초록
This study examines how economics storybook-reading programs connected with home affect young children’s economic concepts and consumer behavior and their parents’ consumer behavior. The participants were fifty 5-year-old children from two classes in a kindergarten in the Kyunggi province. One class was designated the control group and the other the experimental group. The young children from both groups participated in economics storybook-reading activities. The children in the experimental group, however, performed economics education activities with their mothers at home. The results of the study showed that economics storybook-reading programs connected with home had positive effects on the development of economic concepts of young children as well as on the consumer behavior of both the children and their parents. Specifically, the experimental group outperformed its counterpart in two areas of economics concepts: scarcity and complements and substitutes. The experimental group also received significantly higher scores in two areas of consumer behaviors: consumer value and rational purchasing. Another noteworthy finding is that the parents who performed the economics activities with their children achieved higher scores in rational shopping and selling behaviors than the parents in the control group. These results suggest that economics storybook reading is an effective method for economics education for young children and that educational benefits can be maximized by providing activities connected with their homes.
