Between the Semiotic and the Symbolic: The Rupture of Language and the Subject in Process

초록

This study explores Julia Kristeva’s theory of the ‘semiotique’ and ‘symbolique’ by intersecting it with the discourses of Ferdinand de Saussure, Émile Benveniste, and Roland Barthes, and analyzes how post-structuralist semiotics reconstructs language and the subject. Kristeva moves beyond Saussure’s static, langue-centered semiotics to understand language as a dynamic movement of ‘signifiance’. Drawing on Benveniste’s theory of enunciation, she redefines the subject not as a fixed entity but as a ‘subject in process’ (sujet en procès), analyzing the tension between the symbolic order and semiotic rhythms. Furthermore, through resonance with Barthes’ theory of text, she defines text not as a mere tool for communication but as a ‘trans-linguistic apparatus’ that redistributes the order of langue. In conclusion, this paper aims to reveal the generative horizons of Kristevan semiotics by demonstrating that the unstable fissures in language are not mere defects but essential conditions for the production of meaning and subjectification.
