The Condition of Multidimensional Poverty in South Korea: Analysis of Deprivation Interlinkages

초록

Multidimensional poverty measures are crucial in assessing progress toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals for poverty reduction. This study examined the prevalence of various combinations of selected deprivations and co-deprivations among specific deprivation indicators using data from the 2012 and 2022 Korean Welfare Panel Study. The multidimensional poverty index was constructed with ten indicators from five domains: living standards, education, health, economic activity, and social insurance. In 2012, approximately 60% of households in multidimensional poverty experienced deprivations in “education, work, and income” simultaneously; in 2022, the most common deprivations were “education, work, and public pension”. These findings indicate that, despite improvements in social security and reduced income poverty during the last decade, significant deprivation remains in education, health, and work, which are essential for achieving a desirable quality of life. Future research should develop diverse poverty measures to inform multi-sectoral policy interventions in South Korea.
