장애 유아가 있는 다문화가정 아버지들의 자녀 양육 경험과 지원 요구

초록

This study examined the child-rearing experiences and support needs of fathers from multicultural families raising young children with disabilities. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four fathers from multicultural families, two institutional personnel, and one expert, conducted between November 2021 and March 2023. Data were analyzing using qualitative methods. The results were as follows. First, the fathers experienced a double burden: serving as intermediary for communication between home and institutions following their children’s disability diagnosis and actively seeking information necessary for treatment and education, all while navigating the challenges of parenting a child with a disability. Second, they reported communication differences with their spouses due to language barriers and cultural differences, which led to parenting conflicts. Third, they gradually accepted and adapted to their children’s disabilities through efforts to respect both parents’ cultural backgrounds and utilize community resources during the child-rearing process. Fourth, they identified the need for an educational information system tailored to multicultural families with young children with disabilities, support from early intervention specialists, and culturally responsive educational materials and assessment tools. Fifth, they emphasized the importance of peer support groups for parents and access to psychological counseling. Sixth, they advocated for policy improvement, including enhanced disability-related child care service, expansion of integrated and special education classrooms, and strengthened public infrastructure in medically underserved areas. This study is significant as it examined and discussed the parenting experiences and support needs of multicultural families focusing raising young children with disabilities from the fathers’ perspective.
