A Study on Liminality in Hijabista’s Modest Fashion on Social Media

초록

This study aims to analyze the manifestation of liminality in the social media-based modest fashion practices of hijabistas. After examining the concepts and characteristics of hijabistas, modest fashion, and liminality, an analytical framework was constructed by drawing on Victor Turner’s theory of liminality, which was developed from Arnold van Gennep’s theory of rites of passage. Applying this framework, the study analyzed the Instagram posts of the Malaysian hijabista Neelofa from 2020 to 2025, interpreting the findings through the stages of separation, transition, and reaggregation. The results indicate that modest fashion exhibits distinctive characteristics across these three stages. In the stage of separation, the reinterpretation of traditional attire and its expansion into new contexts were observed. In the transition stage, the juxtaposition of religious and modern values and the negotiation of identity became evident. Finally, in the stage of reaggregation, the expansion of industrialization and the adjustment of resulting social conflicts were identified. This study contributes to the modern application of liminality theory by demonstrating its relevance to modest fashion research and highlights the social and cultural significance of Muslim women’s dress practices in the digital era.
