Empirical Analysis of Relationship Between Urban Spatial Forms and Environmental Factors

초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between urban spatial forms and environmental factors using Kruskal-Wallis and correlation analyses. For the empirical analyses, this study uses urban density, urban concentration, types of urban forms (multiple nuclei-dispersed, multiple nuclei-concentrated, mono nuclei-dispersed, and mono nuclei-concentrated), and environmental factors, such as energy consumption, air quality, and resource consumption for 82 cities in Korea. Findings are as follows. First, concentrated urban form has a negative correlation with energy use. Second, the concentrated urban form is also closely correlated with superior environmental quality. Lastly, although the urban form is nuclei-concentrated, it has different impacts on environmental factors between multiple nuclei-concentrated or mono nuclei-concentrated types. Through the empirical analyses, this study suggests better urban form for environmental enhancement, so that it should be very helpful to persue environmentally sustainable urban development and management.
